"Bayonetta 4": Plans Unveiled Before Departure, Future in Doubt

As the Nintendo Switch 2 era dawns, the future of the "Bayonetta" series has become a focal point for gamers. This IP, closely associated with Nintendo platforms for over a decade, has been in a state of uncertainty since Hideki Kamiya, its creative mastermind, left PlatinumGames in 2023. Recently, Kamiya disclosed on his YouTube channel that he had already mapped out a plan for "Bayonetta 4".

Kamiya revealed that he envisioned a completely new trilogy starting from the ending of "Bayonetta 3". He explained, "The trilogy was just a pause. I intended to kick - start a fresh chapter—both rebooting the story and revolutionizing the game system." Regarding the controversial villain "Singularity" in "Bayonetta 3", Kamiya admitted that the plot execution could have been better but emphasized that core elements like the multiverse were seeded as early as the first game. "This is a theme I've always wanted to explore further, and I hope to fully present it to players in the future," he added.

He had hoped to continue developing this spin - off series with director Abebe Tinari. However, with both of them leaving PlatinumGames (Tinari joined Housemarque to develop the PS5 - exclusive "Saros"), these plans have been put on hold. Moreover, since Kamiya has publicly expressed his desire to revive the "Scalebound" project after completing "Okami 2", the likelihood of his return to the "Bayonetta" series seems increasingly slim. Although Nintendo doesn't own the "Bayonetta" copyright, it has funded the development of "Bayonetta 2", "Bayonetta 3", and the spin - off. Additionally, Bayonetta has become an iconic character in "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate". Industry speculation suggests that Nintendo might release a Switch 2 - enhanced version of "Bayonetta 3" in the interim or collaborate with PlatinumGames to continue the series without Kamiya. As the gaming community waits, the fate of the "Bayonetta" series hangs in the balance.
